Microsoft has released a new file recovery app that might just come to the rescue of people who've accidentally deleted an important document, photo or video in Windows.

The Windows File Recovery app is free to download from the Windows Store, but it's not the most user-friendly piece of software you'll ever come across. It's a Command Line tool, which means you're going to need to type specific commands to locate files that have gone AWOL.

The tool lets you search for specific filenames, specific types of file (ie. all the jpeg photos on a particular drive) or use 'wildcard' searches, allowing you to search a disk for any file with the word "receipt" in the filename, for instance.

To perform these searches, you're going to need to use commands with specific syntax, which are helpfully listed on the Microsoft support page for the app.

The Windows File Recovery Tool can be used on hard disks, solid-state drives (SSDs), memory cards or USB drives, meaning it's not only useful for locating documents that have gone missing in action, but potentially photos on erased camera memory cards too.

Amongst the file types the utility can search for are Jpeg photos, MP3 music files, Word/Excel/PowerPoint documents and PDFs.

The general rule of thumb when trying to locate files you've accidentally deleted is to minimize usage of the disk/memory card involved until you can run a recovery utility such as Windows File Recovery, giving you the maximum possible chance of recovering the data before it's overwritten. That means it's a good idea to download the utility in advance of any potential recovery, so that the act of downloading and installation doesn't risk overwriting the file you're trying to save.

Windows File Recovery is only compatible with Windows 10 devices, although it works with both x86 and the newer breed of ARM-based devices.
